A door closer has one job with several stages: control the swing, slow it near the frame, then latch it firmly. When any stage drifts, people describe the symptom rather than the cause. It slams. It sticks. It is too heavy. It does not shut all the way.

Each of those maps to a specific adjustment or a specific failure, and they are not interchangeable. A slamming door and a door that will not latch can be the same unit with two different valves out of position.

The other reason closers get misdiagnosed is that they are visible and hardware stores sell them. So a maintenance person adjusts the wrong screw, then a replacement gets fitted at the wrong size for the door, and the new unit fails faster than the one it replaced because it was never rated for that leaf.
